Immunochemical Test for Occult Blood in Stool (iFOBT or Fit Test)
Your doctor has prescribed an immunochemical test for occult blood (hidden blood not visible to the naked eye) in the stool. This is a simple test primarily used to screen for colorectal cancer.
Do not take the test if you have bleeding hemorrhoids. Wait at least one week without bleeding before collecting the sample. Inform your doctor during your consultation.
1 To prevent your stool sample from falling into the water, use a plastic container or an aluminum plate that you will discard after the sample is collected. You can also use the stool sample that is on the toilet paper after wiping.
2 Pull off the cap to open the collection tube.
3 Only a small amount of stool is needed to cover the tip of the stick. When there is enough stool in the grooves, the clear liquid in the vial will change color (to light brown) after one or two minutes. If this does not happen, add a bit more stool sample to the tip of the stick.
4 Once the collection is complete, keep your sample in the refrigerator (for a maximum of 48 hours).
